HARRISON JENKINS, Dive Instructor
Ever since I can remember, there was always SCUBA gear
sitting in the basement of our home. Tanks, fins, masks everywhere, and wet
suits hanging up all over. They weren't mine, but my father’s. He used to
dive way before I was born. In fact, he was diving before there were any
certification agencies in existence.
In 1989 I took a resort dive off of Hastings Reef in
Australia. While I always heard my father’s stories about diving, until you
experience it for yourself, you really have no idea just how fabulous it
truly is. I was hooked! From that moment on, I turned my primary focus on
getting certified. In 1992 I got my PADI Open Water certification at “Twin
Peaks Travel & Scuba Center”. A few months later I earned my PADI
Advanced Diver Certification. Shortly later I received my SSI Stress &
Rescue certification from “Rocky Mountain Dive Center” in Boulder. I was a
sponge. I couldn’t get enough of diving. I continued to pursue any and all
avenues surrounding SCUBA Diving. I thoroughly enjoyed telling non-divers
about my experiences and helped out the dive shop any way I could. A few
years later, I took and completed SSI’s Dive Control Specialist course. Now
I could assist the Instructors while they were teaching, and help out the
new and experienced divers in their classes.
The shop recognized my excitement with the sport, and my
charisma and communication with students. They offered to make me an
instructor for free. I became an Open Water Instructor for SSI, and then,
accumulated certifications to be able to teach Advanced and Specialty
courses also for SSI. Still my interests in SCUBA diving didn’t stop. I
crossed over into the NAUI organization, and was able to offer education
and certifications now for both agencies. I was intrigued by technical
diving, and after successfully completing dozens upon dozens of technical
dives on my own, I looked into getting the proper certifications. I
obtained certifications from PSA, TDI, IANTD, and NAUI, in extended
range/decompression diving, mixed gas diving for ultra deep dives, and
different gas blending.
While being part of an active SCUBA shop not only allowed me
to teach and progress students to different education levels, it also gave
me the opportunity to lead and organize group trips to remote places and
exotic dive destinations throughout the world. Cozumel, Belize, Bonaire,
Fiji, The Caymans, St Martin, Cabo San Lucas, and Australia just to name a
few. Add to that the popular dive destinations in the US; Hawaii, Florida,
California and her local islands. Group trips bring divers of all levels
together, and create type of second family. They truly are the icing on the
cake.
Whether I’m wearing 5 scuba tanks at 300 feet deep, or
watching manta rays fly overhead in the warm waters of the South Pacific,
I’m happy.
Seeing a new diver take their first breath in the pool, or
spending 2 hours with a chainsaw to cut a hole in the ice to go diving, I’m
in heaven.
