Cancún is one of the easiest beach escapes from anywhere in the U.S. It has nonstop flights from dozens of cities, plenty of all-inclusive choices, and water that really is that shade of turquoise. Our clients still ask one question more than any other: when should we go?
The honest answer: there isn't a bad month, only trade-offs. Here's how we think about them.
December to April: peak season
This is Cancún at its most famous. Days are sunny and in the low-to-mid 80s, humidity is lower, and rain is rare. It's perfect if you're escaping snow.
- Pros: the most reliable weather of the year, with calm evenings for dinner outdoors.
- Cons: the highest prices and the busiest resorts. Holiday weeks and spring break book up early.
- Our tip: Christmas, New Year's, and Presidents' Day week often sell out months ahead. If those are your dates, plan early. Mid-January and the weeks after Easter are often a sweet spot.
A note on spring break
March brings college crowds to the Hotel Zone. If you're a couple or a family who wants quiet, we'll steer you to resorts that don't draw that crowd, or to the calmer Costa Mujeres area just north of town.
May and June: the value window
Crowds thin out, prices ease, and the ocean is warm and clear. It gets hotter and more humid, and sargassum seaweed can arrive on some beaches in late spring and summer. That varies year to year and beach to beach.
This is one of our favorite times to send honeymooners and anniversary couples. You often get an upgraded room category for what a standard room costs in March.
July and August: summer family season
School's out, so family-friendly resorts fill up again, especially kids' club properties and resorts with water parks. It's hot, with short afternoon showers that usually pass quickly.
- Book family suites and connecting rooms early. They're the first to go.
- Whale shark season (roughly June through September) makes a great family excursion from Isla Mujeres or Holbox.
September to mid-November: low season
This is the heart of hurricane season and the rainiest stretch of the year. It's also when you'll find the lowest rates and the emptiest pools. Direct hits are uncommon, but they do happen, so we always recommend travel protection for these dates. We'll also explain the change and cancellation rules before you commit.
Some resorts close for a few weeks of renovation in September. That's another reason to have someone checking for you.
Matching the month to your style
Adults-only getaways
Cancún and nearby Costa Mujeres have excellent adults-only resorts. Late April, May, and early December give you quiet pools and good value without peak-season pricing.
Families
Summer and holiday breaks are when most families travel, so start planning early. If you can pull kids out of school for a few days, early June or the week after Thanksgiving can save a lot.
Best overall value
Late April through early June, and early December before the holidays. The weather is good, prices are fair, and there's more room to breathe.
Getting there from your home airport
Cancún (CUN) is one of the best-connected airports in Mexico. We find flights from wherever you live, whether that's a big hub with nonstops or a smaller regional airport with one easy connection. We often pair them with charter packages that include transfers, so you're not negotiating with shuttle vendors after landing.
Why the "when" matters as much as the "where"
The same resort can feel completely different in February and in September. It changes with the crowds, the price, and even which restaurants are open. Part of our job is matching your dates to the right property, so the trip you picture is the trip you get.
