Los Cabos sits at the very tip of the Baja California peninsula, where the desert meets the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez. It looks nothing like Mexico's Caribbean side. The coast is dramatic and rocky, the sunsets are huge, and the resorts are some of the best in the country.
Here's how we help travelers put together a Cabo trip.
Know the three areas
Cabo San Lucas
Cabo San Lucas is home to the marina, the famous Arch, Medano Beach, and most of the nightlife. It's energetic and walkable, and a great pick if you want restaurants and activity close by.
The Tourist Corridor
This is the roughly 20-mile stretch between the two towns, and it's where many of the top luxury resorts and golf courses sit. It's quieter and more upscale, with easy access to both towns.
San José del Cabo
San José del Cabo has a historic town center, an art district with Thursday-night art walks, and a calmer pace. It's also the closest area to the airport (SJD).
A word about the water
This surprises a lot of first-time visitors: many Pacific-facing beaches in Los Cabos aren't safe for swimming because of strong currents and shore breaks. Resort pools are spectacular for that reason. If swimming in the ocean is important to you, we'll point you to resorts near the calmer, swimmable beaches, like Medano Beach and select coves along the corridor.
Must-do experiences
- El Arco and Land's End: take a short boat ride or a glass-bottom tour past the Arch, sea lions, and Lover's Beach.
- Golf: Los Cabos is one of the world's great golf destinations, with ocean-view courses designed by Nicklaus, Norman, Fazio, and others. We can arrange tee times and golf-focused resorts.
- Whale watching: gray and humpback whales visit from roughly mid-December through March or April.
- Snorkeling: try Santa María and Chileno bays, or take a day trip to Cabo Pulmo marine park.
- Todos Santos: an artsy town about an hour north, great for a day trip.
- Sunset dinner: clifftop restaurants here are a highlight of any trip.
When to go
- November to April: peak season, with dry, sunny days, warm afternoons, cool evenings, and whale season. It's the best weather, at the highest prices.
- May and June: still dry and warmer, often with excellent value. It's a favorite window of ours.
- July to October: hot and humid, with hurricane risk peaking in September. You'll find the lowest rates, warm water, and great fishing. Travel protection is a must.
Choosing your resort
Cabo has everything from lively all-inclusives to quiet luxury hotels where you dine out every night. Think about:
- All-inclusive vs. European plan: Cabo has a great restaurant scene, so some travelers prefer to dine out.
- Adults-only vs. family: both are well represented, from couples' retreats to resorts with kids' clubs and lazy rivers.
- Location: walk-to-town convenience or corridor seclusion.
- Swimmable beach: see above. It matters more here than almost anywhere.
Getting there
San José del Cabo International (SJD) has nonstops from many U.S. cities and easy one-stop routes from nearly everywhere else. We book from your home airport and can bundle private or shared transfers, which matters here because resorts can be 15 to 45 minutes from the airport.
Pair it with something more
Los Cabos works well on its own, but we also love pairing it with a few days in Todos Santos or La Paz. You can also combine it with a Mexican Riviera cruise that calls on Cabo.
