Fly into Cancún International and you can be in two very different vacations within an hour. Turn left and you're in Cancún's Hotel Zone. Head south and you're on the Riviera Maya, the coastline that runs through Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Akumal, and Tulum.
Both are wonderful. Choosing the right one depends on what you want your days to feel like.
Cancún at a glance
Cancún's Hotel Zone is a narrow strip of land shaped like a "7", with the Caribbean on one side and a lagoon on the other. Resorts sit side by side along some of the brightest, softest sand in Mexico.
- Short transfers: usually 15–30 minutes from the airport.
- Energy: nightlife, shopping, restaurants, and plenty to do off-property.
- Water: the northern stretch near Playa Norte faces calm water. The long eastern side has bigger waves and stunning color, but swimming conditions vary.
- Nearby: an easy ferry to Isla Mujeres, plus the quieter Costa Mujeres resort area to the north.
Cancún is a great fit if…
…you want a short travel day, a lively atmosphere, a long weekend, or easy access to dining and nightlife outside the resort.
Riviera Maya at a glance
The Riviera Maya stretches roughly 80 miles south of Cancún. Resorts here are more spread out, often set inside jungle grounds with private beaches, cenotes nearby, and a slower pace.
- Longer transfers: 30 minutes to Puerto Morelos, about an hour to Playa del Carmen, and 90 minutes or more to Tulum.
- Space: larger resort footprints, more garden and beach room, and many swim-up and suite options.
- Culture and nature: Mayan ruins at Tulum and Cobá, snorkeling in Akumal's turtle bays, swimming in cenotes, and the ferry to Cozumel.
- Towns: Playa del Carmen's Fifth Avenue for walking and dining, and Tulum's boutique, laid-back vibe.
Riviera Maya is a great fit if…
…you're staying a week or more, want a resort that feels like a retreat, or plan to explore ruins, reefs, and cenotes.
Side by side
- Honeymoons and couples: both work well. Riviera Maya leans romantic and secluded, while Cancún's adults-only resorts add easy nights out.
- Families: both have strong family resorts. Riviera Maya has more of the big, activity-packed properties, and Cancún wins on short transfers with little ones.
- Groups and weddings: Riviera Maya resorts often have more event space and gorgeous ceremony sites.
- Budget: both range from great-value to ultra-luxury. Season matters more than location.
Can you do both?
Absolutely. A split stay is one of our favorite ways to see the region: a few nights in Cancún, then a move south to the Riviera Maya. We handle the transfer between resorts so it feels like one smooth trip.
The resort matters more than the map
Within each area, properties vary a lot in beach quality, food, room layouts, and crowd. Over the years we've learned which ones fit which travelers. That knowledge is worth more than any map when you're choosing where to spend your week.
